Transparency around Beacon Battery Lifetime
First of all, the energy consumption of all beacons on the market depends primarily on the used Bluetooth Low Energy chip and it’s Rx/Tx (Receiving & Transmitting) power consumption when advertising. We use the TI CC2640 which is one of the best chips on the market, especially compared to other manufacturers using the nRF51822.
Second, the advertising interval and the Transmission Power (Tx Power) have the highest impact. Third, the battery capacity (in our case 3000mAh vs. coin cells with at max 1000mAh) that is available.
In the end we end up with the following chart that shows the battery lifetime depending on the configuration of the beacon.
In case of very cold temperatures Lithium batteries can be the better choice.
